Coarse and Curly

Hair: A weird thing humans have weaponized, leverages, and used many culturally unique and important ways. There's actually a million things to say about this, but we took on the race angle in this conversation. This is a very brief history about afro-textured hair; when the racism and discrimination started, how far it has came, and how much more education and understanding we need.

133 | Prion Diseases | Why We Do What We Do

This was a creepy discussion that maybe would have been better suited to a Halloween episode. We break down the process of brain deterioration from misfolded proteins called “prions” [pree-awnz]. Perhaps you’ve heard of Mad Cow disease, Crutzfeldt-Jakob disease. These are types of prion diseases. Unfortunately, prion diseases have no cure and cannot be prevented by heating or otherwise chemically treating food containing prions. Prion diseases have a 100% fatality rate within 2-3 years of diagnosis. Furthermore, it is unlikely to be diagnoseable until destruction is nearly complete. The only strategy we have is to try and prevent this disease by avoiding consuming things that are likely to cause it.

But many people don’t know about the underlying philosophy of twin studies, how they have been used, and what we can learn from them. Turns out this research method is a lot less robust than it seems. Learn about what the “shared experience” hypothesis is and how it weakens the execution of psychological research and testing using twins.
