221 | Impulsivity and the Marshmallow

What to Expect:

This episode will highlight early studies of Walter Mischel that examined “delay to gratification” effects under various circumstances, and several follow-up studies looking at longitudinal impact of the initial results. While early results suggested correlations in predictive value toward future academic and behavioral success, these may have been overgeneralized from a narrow sample population, and ignorant of more potent variables in a child’s environment.

153 | Triage: The Best Idea Ever?

A triage system seems like a common-sense idea, however, it had to start somewhere. Turns out it has only been around in its recognizable form for a couple of centuries. Most people think of triage as it pertains to medicine, and there is some interesting information here that we discussed, however, triage has also been applied to mental health systems, as well as academic support. Everywhere that people have implemented a triage system, that system improved. This might be one of the human race’s greatest inventions! Or at least one that we are very excited about.

150 | Montessori Schooling (Part 1)

Running around covered in marker and glitter! In the first part of this discussion, we will highlight the background of Maria Montessori’s educational theory and practice. This theory proposes unique learning materials, a child-directed approach, and why it may or may not be beneficial for different age groups. Having maintained its popularity for over 100 years, the Montessori approach is not without some unanswered questions. We will unpack the Montessori approach and see how it compares to other more researched and familiar practices, and what some of the benefits are.

At the time that we recorded this, we had no idea how pervasive the coronavirus was going to become, so we made no mention of it. Forgive the lack of discussion about this topic. However, perhaps this is an opportunity to focus on something else for a while. We discuss the history of dyslexia, some of the factors that may have contributed to the increase in prevalence, and diagnostic criteria. Furthermore, we describe some of the interventions and curriculum that has been designed to help individuals with dyslexia.
