Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious offense that is unfortunately prevalent throughout academia and in other professional domains. While it has been universally determined to be poor professional practice, like any problem behavior it demands a closer analysis from a behavioral perspective. This episode will explore the unique circumstances under which plagiarism in its many forms may occur, and how we might cultivate alternative skills that prevent such behavior and avoid the temptations of tough situations that make it more likely.

The History of Psychoanalysis

One of the theories that put psychology into the mainstream was Psychoanalysis, or Freudian psychology. We review the history of Freud and the development of psychoanalytic theory/therapy and the subsequent divide. We also spend a little time on the theory itself, you know, in case you repressed the memory of learning it in school.

218 | ABA Pt. 8: The Finale

This is what we have been building toward. The most vitriolic insult hurled at behavior analysis is to compare it to gay conversion “therapy” (see past episode for a full-length discussion of this harmful practice). This is rooted in the idea that behavior analysts are just out to make autistic people indistinguishable for normative populations by changing who they are. We really get into the weeds of the nuances in unpacking this complicated issue.

217 | ABA Pt. 7: Feelings

Behavior Analysts are accused of ignoring the feelings of the individuals whom they serve. This can be in the form of blocking self-soothing behaviors such as stereotypy, or simply pushing for working through emotional experiences. This is further evidenced by the fact that discussions of feelings are all but absent from professional literature from behavior analysts. Although seldom discussed, feelings are important to behavior analysts. In addition, behavior analysts are not experts in emotional mental health, so are most likely to refer to a specialist. We <3 emotions.

216 | ABA Pt. 6: Dependency

Applied Behavior Analysts are sometimes accused of enforcing compliance to the point that an individual doe not have autonomy to make their own choices or learn to say no. We think everyone should be a little noncompliant now and then (as long as no one is getting hurt!). What do we have to say for ourselves?

188 | Real Fake Medicine

As Green Day once sang, “Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me…Am I just paranoid, or am I just stoned?” Great question, and one worth investigating. We do a lot of things to feel better, but what about taking a whole lot of nothing? It’s called a placebo, and there are many components and interesting effects of such treatment that may help those dealing with pain and discomfort from a variety of illnesses. We’ll shed some light on the Placebo Effect and see how an initial phenomenon has evolved into a potentially strategic and cost-effective future for pain management.

134 | Psychedelics in Therapy With Stu Law (Part 1) | Why We Do What We Do

A skeptical but optimistic discussion about the use of psychedelic drugs for mental health. Stu and Abraham mostly unpack the history of psychedelics in this discussion. There are some jokes and light-heartedness, but the message is an important one. There are things to be excited about in the future of therapy with the assistance of psychedelics, but if we are not careful, then we might be plunged back in the dark ages of psychedelics for medicinal value.

132 | The Ghosts of Limbs Past: Phantom Limb Pain | Why We Do What We Do

WARNING! In this episode, we discuss topics that involve severe harm to humans and animals. If this is a sensitive issue for you, consider skipping this episode. For the most part, we made attempts to avoid the description of actual physical violence. Instead, we explore what phantom limb pain is and some of the hypotheses around why we have it. Have you ever wondered whether people born without limbs would feel phantom limb pain? Or where the pain is located in the missing body part? We describe the research on how common this experience is and what researchers believe they understand about why people experience pain in missing body parts after those body parts are no longer there, sometimes long after they are gone!
